Rice rots at Bara and Parsa hits increment in the price
Chiranjeevee Pokhrel for DC Nepal, November 22, 2015 - Rice industrialists at Bara and Parsa face the loss of more than 7.5 billion rupees in rice production due to 3 months’ long strike, blockade and ongoing Terai Movement. The major three reasons to stop the industry are: lack of operation of the industry due to strike of Madhesh-centered parties; due to lack of raw materials; and due to undeclared Indian blockade; and hindrances. Corridor Rice Industries’ production has stopped and so supply of food has been imbalanced and could not meet the demand at Kathmandu. The incident has led to the increment in price of rice. Mohit Agro Pvt. Ltd.’s Manager Subodh Gupta says, “As the production has been stopped, there is shortage of rice at the major cities including Kathmandu.” “Due to lack of adequate supply, there is increment in price of rice by Rs.5 per kg.” says Gupta. He adds, “As more than 250 rice industries are closed, the entire country is facing the shortage of rice.” Some industries have continued the production using the existing stock of raw materials; however, they are also unable to give the supply.
