fghanistan, Oct. 26 – A powerful 7.5 magnitude earthquake struck northeastern Afghanistan on Monday, at least people and generating strong aftershocks throughout south Asia.Most of the casualties thus far were reported in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province and in tribal areas bordering Afghanistan, where 146 deaths were confirmed. Afghanistan has reported 34 deaths.At least 12 schoolgirls were killed as they attempted to leave their school in Afghanistan, sources told Al Jazeera. The epicenter of the earthquake was in a remote, mountainous region about 28 miles north of the Afghan town of Alaqahdari-ye Kiran wa Munjan and nearly 160 miles from Kabul, the Afghan capital.Dawn news reported at least 52 people died in Pakistan.
Death tolls were expected to continue to rise. At least three aftershocks measuring up to magnitudes of 4.8 were reported nearly 125 miles west-northwest of the epicenter.The quake was about 120 miles deep and caused more than two minutes of sustained shaking felt throughout the region, including Pakistan and India.The quake caused a landslide near Pakistan’s Hunza river.”Heard about strong earthquake in Afghanistan-Pakistan region whose tremors have been felt in parts of India. I pray for everyone’s safety,” Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote on Twitter.The region has a history of powerful earthquakes due to the Indian subcontinent drifting into and under the Eurasian landmass.
