Clearly inspired by the likes of Inside Amy Schumer, Funny Girls mixes sketches with a Flight of the Conchords-esque narrative about Matafeo and Laura Daniel’s attempts to create a comedy show for women. begins with Matafeo pitching her idea to a room full of dismissive male suits. Addressing them as if they were 7 Days’ hardcore audience, she attempts to persuade them to give it a go while batting away their excruciating title suggestions, which include Komedy from a Kitchen, Turn Off, Men and Tit Time. Later, we meet the no-budget show’s producer Pauline (What We Do In the Shadows’ Jackie Van Beek), a deadpan character who evokes happy memories of the Rhys Darby’s hapless Conchord’s manager Murray. The show’s highlight though was an ESPN-inspired look at the world of “competitive yoga”. E5 Yoga pitched Kimberley Crossman and Matafeo as downward-dog posing rivals (with one of them accused of using “banned” chakra-strengthening crystals), while Urzila Carlson turned up as the award-winning “Big Dee”, who claimed to “not be here for the accolades, just to work on my anger management”.
